Statement of Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Denmark on Danish Parliamentary Debate on Hong Kong-related Question
2020/12/23

As the Danish Parliament held a debate and passed a motion on Hong Kong-related question, the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Denmark makes the following statement:

Since the return of Hong Kong to China, Hong Kong people, without any doubt, enjoy more extensive rights and freedoms than at anytime in history. The enactment of the National Security Law in the HKSAR is to safeguard China’s national sovereignty, security and development interests, and to prevent, curb and punish acts that endanger national security, so as to ensure lasting stability and prosperity of Hong Kong and enduring success of the “one country, two systems” policy. The National Security Law aims to restore peace and stability in Hong Kong and only targets a very small number of people who endanger national security while protect the rights, freedom and interests of the vast majority of Hong Kong residents, including foreigners in Hong Kong.

The Chinese Government attaches great importance to the promotion and protection of human rights. We pursue the concept of people-centered human rights, taking the right to subsistence and development as the primary human rights. We have met the basic need of 1.4 billion people and lifted more than 850 million out of poverty. Facing the sudden outbreak of COVID-19, the Chinese government puts people’s life front and center, makes the best efforts possible to protect people's safety and health and safeguard every individual’s value and dignity.

I stress that questions relating to Hong Kong are entirely China’s internal affairs with which the Danish Parliament has no right to meddle. Some Danish parliamentarians turn a blind eye to facts, make groundless attacks on China’s policy towards Hong Kong as well as China’s human rights situation, and push for exerting pressure on China. What they have done not only violates the basic norms of international relations, but also expose their double standards. We strongly urge those parliamentarians to immediately stop interfering in China’s internal affairs. China will continue to take all necessary measures to firmly defend its national sovereignty, security and development interests.
