Remarks of Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Denmark on Danish Foreign Minister's Comments on Hong Kong

The activities of hostile forces inside and outside Hong Kong have substantially sabotaged China's national security. We cannot sit and watch while those forces attempt to use Hong Kong to split the country, subvert state power, organize and carry out terrorist activities, and intervene in the city's affairs.

National security legislation is within the authority of the central government. The decision of the National People’s Congress is to exercise its power and fulfill its responsibility of safeguarding national security in accordance with the Constitution of China and the Basic Law of Hong Kong. This is totally justified.

"One country, two systems" is a basic national policy of China, and the Chinese government remains unwavering in its determination to implement this policy. The aim of the National People's Congress to authorize its Standing Committee to introduce the relevant law by way of its decision is to target the very few people who engage in activities that endanger national security, not law-abiding citizens. The rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong people will not be compromised.

The legal basis for the governance of Hong Kong by the Chinese government is the Constitution of China and the Basic Law of Hong Kong, not the Sino-British Joint Declaration. It is untenable to accuse China of not honoring its international obligation.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China and Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs. We are firmly opposed to all forms of interference in Hong Kong affairs by any foreign country. We strongly urge the Danish side to observe international laws and basic norms governing international relations, respect China's efforts to safeguard national security, refrain from interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and take real actions to ensure sound and steady development of China-Denmark relations.
